SAINT EUPHEMIUS, ARCHBISHOP OF TOLEDO
Saint Euphemius was one of the most outstanding pupils of Saint Benedict, the patriarch of the monks of the West, and brought the Rule of the same to Spain. The sanctity of his conduct made such an impression on King Athanagild that he built a monastery for him, which he had inaugurated and dedicated in honour of Saint Julian.
Euphemius was a valiant fighter against the heresy of Arius, but this earned him the hatred of the zealous Arian king Leovigildis, who exiled him and caused him much suffering as a result. Once he had been able to return to his monastic family from his exile, he was raised to the archbishopric of Toledo, and as such attended the great third synod of Toledo. He died about the year 590.
