SAINT EUSEUS, HERMIT
Saint Euseus flourished in the 14th century. A native of Serravalle in Piedmont, he lived as a hermit on a nearby rock, subsisting on shoemaking, which is why he is usually depicted surrounded with shoemaking tools and is considered a patron saint of cobblers. A church was built for him on that lofty place where he lived.
It is probably this Saint Euseus, of whom Menzel* (II. 33) says that three lilies grew out of his grave, although - instead of Euseus - his register of saints lists Enseus. This latter saint name does not occur in any other saints' catalogue, therefore this spelling in the register must have popped up due to an erroneous reading. (II. 852)
