OFFA, KING OF ESSEX
Offa was a king of Essex who, according to Bede's account, gave up his throne in England around the year 707 in order to make a pilgrimage to Rome and to become a monk (Hist eccl. Angl. v. 19). Some credit him with founding the Schuttern monastery (Offonszelle) in Mortenau. (Rottb. K.-G. Deutschl. II. 85). Bucelin* and other hagiographers list this holy king as "Blessed Offa."
