SAINT EUTHYMIUS, BISHOP OF SARDIS, MARTYR
Most probably, Saint Euthymius was born during the last years of Emperor Constantinus Copronymus' reign. He became a monk, and some years later was raised to the episcopal Chair of Sardis in Lydia under Constantius and his mother Irene.
As bishop, he excelled at the general council of Nicaea in 787, which was assembled against the iconoclasts.
He had to go into exile three times, the last time to the promontory of Akrita in Bithynia, where he was imprisoned and, by order of the emperor, and beaten so cruelly with ox sinews that he died eight days later. The Bollandists* state A.D. 840 as the year of his death, Butler* 820, and others 828. The Roman Martyrology* mentions the saint as a martyr on the above day, while in the Greek Meneae* feature his name on December 26. (II. 73)
