According to Menzel* (Symb. II. 549), Saint Excelsus was killed and buried under a wine barrel in the cellar. Because for years and years on end the wine from this barrel never run out, the miracle was investigated and the saint's holy body discovered beneath it. But neither in the church dedicated to him, S. Ercelso near Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, nor anywhere else can the barrel be found. (Mz.)
