SAINT MARCELLUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS


Saint Marcellus suffered with many other.martyrs; only  some of whom are known by name. Piazza* (I. 478) is not quite sure whether they were killed in Rome, as the Bollandists* state in their entry.

  Piazza* relates that 188 Christian men and women were martyred on this occasion. As far as they are known, they were called: Marcellus, Avidus, Gagus, Donatus, Mesomus (?), Possemus (?), Saturnus, Januarius, Victor, Virianus, Urban, Felix, Veneria, Rogatian, Fortunatus, Extricatus, Victurina, Gorgonia, Toga (?), Felicity, Valeria, Prisca, Paula, Fortunata, Donata, Victuria, Sinereus (?), Cassian, Quintus, Zetula, Victorinus, Silvanus, Gagia, Rogatian, Aurelius, Apronus (?), Nabor, Quintus, Metuana, Libosus, Emeritus, Sextus, Fructus (?), Severus, Secundus, Januarius, Florus, Titonia, Donata, Januaria, Severa, Januarius (Januarissa), Honorata, Saturninus, Victoria, Matura, Lucia, Neptunalis (?), Criscens (?), Pompanus, Cyprus, Tertula, Lucia (Lucius), Silvana, Publius, Obercus (?), Justa, Domitius, Procula, Rufina, Valeria, Januaria, Silvanus, Felix, Weneria (?), Victor, Fortunata, Exuperia, Flavia, Justus, Matrona, Faustina, Gallicia, Januaria, Fortunatus, Publius, Romanus, Peter, Veranus, Apinus and 102 others whose names have not been handed down to us. But even of those cited, several are doubtful, as it seems very unlikely that all of their names are spelled correctly in the records that are still available. (I. 187)
