PAUL OF LUCKA, CISTERCIAN
Paul (Paulus) was a lay brother of the Cistercian Order at the monastery at Lucka in Saxe-Altenburg (Kloster Lucka, Sachsen-Altenburg), which had been founded in A.D. 1143.
A Frieslander by descent, Paul was a youth of exceptional holiness. By humility and willing acceptance of crosses and hardships, through constant purity of heart and tireless zeal in prayer, he climbed to the pinnacle of virtue. During his last hours the brothers who surrounded his deathbed witnessed him giving up the ghost happily and half-smiling. Henriquez*, Chalemot* and other hagiographers list him as "Blessed Paul"; the Bollandists* mention this holy man among the Praetermissi (II. 151).
