SAINT BENIGNUS, ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH
Saint Benignus, also known as Benen, archbishop of Armagh on the Emerald Isle, came from a distinguished family in Ireland. His father, who converted to Christianity, provided hospitality to Saint Patrick (Patricius) in his house, and it was there, in the area of Taragh or Themoria, the abode of the Irish kings, that this apostle celebrated his first Easter. Although Saint Benignus was still very young at that time, Saint Patrick, with the consent of the boy's parents, made him an inseparable companion in his apostolic work. After the death of his tutor Benignus was raised to the archbishopric of Armagh, where he directed his church with apostolic zeal for ten years. He died in the 5th century.
