SAINT HERACLIUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS OF ATHENS
S.S. Heraclius, Paulinus et Benedimus, M.M.
The Greek Menology* describes these holy martyrs, Heraclius, Paulinus and Benedimus (Menedemus), as citizens of Athens who excelled in their zeal for faith - so much that many of their fellow citizens professed Christianity at their persuasion. Eventually, they were reported for being Christians and summonsed before the judge. In court, they made a glorious confession, praising Christ as God and Creator of the universe. When they had patiently and without hesitation submitted to all the tortures on the rack, they were sentenced to death by fire, in which they sealed their faith with their disciples. According to others, the flame left them untouched, whereupon they were killed by the axe. They seem to have suffered by the third century at the latest (III. 453).
