ALAN, BISHOP OF AUXERRE
Alan [Alain], born in Flanders, was a student of
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. After a time as abbot of Ripatorium (Larrivour, La Rivour), he became bishop of Auxerre. Eventually, he resigned his episcopal dignity and ended his earthly pilgrimage as a monk in the monastery at Clairvaux in 1160. He is known as Alanus Insulensis ("of the islands").
