BLESSED GERARD, CARDINAL BISHOP OF OSTIA
Blessed Gerard of Ostia (Gerardus, Geraldus) was first prior in Cluny (Cluni, Clugny), then cardinal bishop of Ostia. A faithful companion of Saint Ulrich of Cluny, Gerard stood out among his contemporaries for his gentleness and piety, as well as for his manly courage, so much so that Pope Alexander II considered him worthy to succeed Peter Damian as Bishop of Ostia and as Cardinal. The office of papal legate in France was also entrusted to him with great success. Under Pope Gregory VII Gerard was sent to Spain in the same capacity. Henry IV had him pursued and captured. Nevertheless, Gerard remained a pillar of the church until his death, which took place in 1077. The Elenchus* mentions him on December 6, Lechner* on December 7 (Lech., El.).
