BLESSED ENGELBERT, RELIGIOUS
Blessed Engelbert had been born blind, but was endowed by God with rare inner gifts of grace. Led by another boy, he went barefoot from one holy place to the other in a simple dress in the heat and cold, never ate meat, never slept in a bed, and finally, for his greater sanctification, he joined the Cistercian Order.
To the wife of Duke Henry the Lion he made the prediction that one of her sons would become emperor, which was fulfilled by Otto IV. As he lay on his deathbed, his mother, who herself had been ill for nine years, was inconsolable; But the dying son called out to her: “Mother, Holy Mary will deliver you." And behold, once the son had died the mother made a full recovery. These events occurred in 1190.
