BLESSED ANDREW, RELIGIOUS
Andrew (Andreas), previously archdeacon at Verdun, was a monk at Clairvaux. Abbot Robert, successor of Saint Bernard, had admitted him to the Order. Andrew soon found it too strict for his liking and said he thought of leaving and to move to a less austere Order, whereupon the whole congregation prayed for him.
Then it happened that same day that peas, for which Andrew always had a particular disgust, were served. Oddly enough, this time they tasted so delicious to him, even though they were plain (only cooked with salt and water), that he would have preferred them even to meat and fish. After this miraculous experience, Andrew stayed in the monastery and, strangely enough, peas always seemed very tasty to him from then on. He died in the 12th century and is counted among the “blessed” in his Order.
