BLESSED BERENGARIUS, BISHOP OF LERIDA
Berengarius [Berenger], bishop of Lerida (Ilerda) in Spain, was appointed but never consecrated. A canon at the cathedral of that church at first, he subsequently entered the Dominican Order and was elected bishop there in a most miraculous way: When, after the death of Bishop Barberanus, the canons could not agree on the choice of his successor, an angel is said to have appeared in their midst and to have ordered them to elect the monk Berengar. Whether this incident is fact or fiction can no longer be determined, but this much is certain: the Blessed was elected, but died before his episcopal consecration could take place. He went to his eternal reward on October 2, 1256.
