ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY
Saints celebrated on the 27th of January
Blessed George (Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevicius), born into a Lithuanian farmer's family on April 13, 1871, was a highly gifted priest who in 1918 became Bishop of Vilnius. He founded the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and the Handmaids of Jesus in the Eucharist.
From 1911 onwards, in his role as Superior-General of the Marian Fathers, Blessed George worked in secret to revive the Marian Fathers after the Russian authorities had suppressed all religious Orders. A noted teacher and spiritual director, he also travelled extensively to set up other branches of the Order abroad - in Switzerland, and in the United States.
Blessed George died on January 27, 1927, of a perforated appendix during emergency surgery.
On June 28, 1987, the holy bishop, whose episcopal motto had been "Overcome evil with good", was beatified in Saint Peter's Basilica by Pope John Paul II. He is a patron of teachers.
