SAINT MENGOLD OF HUY, MARTYR
Saint Mengold (Meyngold, Megingaud) is venerated as a martyr in Huy, a Belgian town on the Meuse, between Namur and Liège. He was Count of Huy. As such, he had numerous feuds and fights with neighbours and strangers, and therefore had many enemies.
Finally, he took a penitential garment and embarked on a pilgrimage to several holy places for seven years. Eventually he was murdered by his enemies, perhaps near Sierke on the Moselle. The crime probably happened on August 28, 892. February 8 seems to mark the translation of his relics from St Maximin in Trier [Treves] to St Mary's Church in Huy. St Mengold is the patron saint of millers and bakers.
