LIGERIUS, FOUNDER
Ligerius (15 September), an anchorite, was the founder of the abbey of Dunen (Dunum) in the area of Furnes (Furnae) in the western part of Flanders, which was later transferred to Bruges (Brugae).
He lived a very strict life according to the Rule of Saint Benedict, and the reputation of his holiness spread far and wide. He attracted several disciples whom he led for over 20 years. In 1120 he died godly in the Lord. Some hagiographers call him “blessed,” others “venerable;” the Bollandists* list him among the Praetermissi.
