BLESSED RAINGARDE OF MARCIGNY, WIDOW
Blessed Raingarde |
Blessed Raingarde (Raingardis, Ragengardis),
commemorated on June 24, was the mother of Peter the Venerable, widow of Count Maurice of Montbaussier and nun at Marsiguy in Bourgogne. She is venerated in the Auvergne.
The martyrologies of the Cluniacs give her the title “saint.” She died lying on ashes on June 24, 1135 and is sometimes called Raingardis. Effigies often depict her with skulls and broomsticks to mark their contempt for the world and humble service. (Mg.)
