GUILLAUME, BISHOP OF PARIS
Notre Dame in Paris |
Guillaume (Guilielmus), commemorated on November 23, descended from the family of Seignelay (Seligniacum). According to Zedler* (XXXVI. 1526), he was a brother of Bishop Manasses of Orleans and a cousin of Saint Bernard.
In 1206 he became Bishop of Auxerre in France. Bucelin* relates that he gained great reputation as such, but then, because he had come into conflict with the cathedral chapter, he was replaced. Pope Honorius III. then entrusted Guillaume with the diocese of Paris. He died on November 23, 1223. We reckon that it is doubtful that he enjoys ecclesiastical veneration. He left behind a Summa theologiae and an Opusculum de oficiis ecclesiasticis.
