SAINT CECILIA YU SO-SA, WIDOW AND MARTYR
On May 6, 1984 Pope John Paul II canonized 103 Korean Martyrs, most of whom were lay people that had been killed during the 18th century persecution of Christians.
Cecilia Yu So-sa was born in Seoul, in 1761. Cecilia was a married woman - her children, also Martyrs, were Saints Paul Chong Ha-sang and Elizabeth Chong-hye.
When Cecilia was widowed, she was deprived of all her possessions and imprisoned because of her Christian faith. A lady of 79 at the time of her martyrdom, Cecilia was not beheaded. Instead, she was flogged to the point of death. She died in Bo-jeong prison on November 23.
She is also commemorated on September 20.
