MODESTUS, BISHOP OF APT

This venerable bishop was the son of Count Arnold of Villeneuve des Arcs and his wife Isabella of Haluin de Piennes, but he renounced all the wealth and honours of his famous family and entered the order of the Franciscan Recollects.

On February 28, 1629 he was appointed Bishop of Apt by King Louis XIII; this was confirmed by Pope Urban VIII. In 1637, Modestus founded the Women of the Visitation and the Ursuline Sisters, and the following year he reformed the Cistercian Monastery of the Holy Cross and the Abbey of the Canonesses of St Catharine. He also had a new breviary published, decorated the churches with valuable ornaments and, when he died on January 7, 1670, took with him the reputation of "the best shepherd". (Gall. Chr. SAINT LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR Laura, a widow and martyr of Cordoba in Spain, is mentioned in the Spanish martyrology of Tamajode Salazar, who refers to Luitprand, where it says the following: St Laura is said to have been of a noble family, and according to the wishes of her parents she married an equally noble man and gave birth to two daughters. After the death of her husband and her daughters, she went to the monastery of St Aurea, named St-Maria de Cuteclara, and after her martyrdom led the same for nine years as her successor.
