WELCOME!
MODESTUS, BISHOP OF APT
This venerable bishop was the son of Count Arnold of Villeneuve des Arcs and his wife Isabella of Haluin de Piennes, but he renounced all the wealth and honours of his famous family and entered the order of the Franciscan Recollects.
On February 28, 1629 he was appointed Bishop of Apt by King Louis XIII; this was confirmed by Pope Urban VIII. In 1637, Modestus founded the Women of the Visitation and the Ursuline Sisters, and the following year he reformed the Cistercian Monastery of the Holy Cross and the Abbey of the Canonesses of St Catharine. He also had a new breviary published, decorated the churches with valuable ornaments and, when he died on January 7, 1670, took with him the reputation of "the best shepherd". (Gall. Chr. I. 372 et 373).
