MODESTUS, BISHOP OF APT

This venerable bishop was the son of Count Arnold of Villeneuve des Arcs and his wife Isabella of Haluin de Piennes, but he renounced all the wealth and honours of his famous family and entered the order of the Franciscan Recollects.

On February 28, 1629 he was appointed Bishop of Apt by King Louis XIII; this was confirmed by Pope Urban VIII. In 1637, Modestus founded the Women of the Visitation and the Ursuline Sisters, and the following year he reformed the Cistercian Monastery of the Holy Cross and the Abbey of the Canonesses of St Catharine. He also had a new breviary published, decorated the churches with valuable ornaments and, when he died on January 7, 1670, took with him the reputation of "the best shepherd". (Gall. Chr. ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 7th of January WELCOME! SAINT VALENTINE, BISHOP OF RHAETIA Saint Valentine (Valentinus) is the patron saint of the diocese of Passau. The Proprium of Passau relates his life story as follows: Saint Valentine came from the seashore and arrived at Batava, today's Passau. Here he wanted to proclaim the gospel to the inhabitants, who were ignorant of the true worship of God, and therefore went to Rome to obtain the necessary authority from the Pope for this undertaking.
