SAINT FINAN, BISHOP OF LINDISFARNE
Saint Finan (Finanus), commemorated on February 17, and also on January 9, was of noble Scottish descent. He received an excellent education in virtue and learning, became a monk in the monastery of St Columba on the island of Hy, and later Bishop of Lindisfarne. As such, he succeeded Saint Aidan, built the church at Lindisfarne, converted and baptised King Penda, consecrated Dimma and St Cedd. After ten years of episcopal ministry, he went to his eternal reward in 661. He did not live according to the rule of Saint Benedict, but according to that of Saint Columba. Bucelin* places his memorial on January 9 and states that he died in 659. (III. 21).
