SAINT FULGENTIUS, ABBOT

Saint Fulgentius [September 10, December 10] was born in Brabant. He consecrated himself to the Lord in the monastery of St Ageric in Verdun. The monks there did not communicate with the local bishop because an anathema lay upon him. He, in turn, banished the whole community of monks from his territory.

Where were they to turn to? Attracted by the good reputation of the religious association formed six years earlier in Afflighem, Fulgentius went there and edified all the brothers so wonderfully that they elected him as their abbot. Because of his humility Fulgentius tried to refuse at first, but eventually he consented. Soon, over 200 brothers gathered around him, whom he guided to all virtues, along with the nuns who lived in a separate building. He predicted the deaths of the two saints, Anselm of Canterbury and Hugh of Cluny, whose heavenly abodes he had seen in a vision, and finally followed both of them in 1122.
