SAINT MAXIMINUS, BISHOP OF STRASBOURG
According to a history in verse written by Erkenbald in the tenth century, this Saint Maximinus (commemorated on October 26 and February 6) was the third bishop of Strasbourg (Argentoratum, Silberthal - Silver Valley). It states:
Alpha nitet dignus pater hujus sedis Amandus,
Justus justitiae post addictus assecla summae,
Hunc Maximinus baculatur in ordine trinus.
That is:
Amandus opens the line of the fathers of the diocese.
He is followed by Justus, a faithful admirer of strict justice.
After him, Maximinus, as the third bishop, bore the crosier.
Wympheling asserts that Maximinus was bishop for eight years. (c.f. Gallica Christiana* V. 779). That he administered his office with self-sacrifice and love is best attested by the grateful memory of his church. He flourished in the late fourth or early fifth century. Maximinus is one of the holy patrons of the Diocese of Strasbourg. He is said to be buried in Haslach (Haselacus).
