WELCOME!
WILLIAM OF REICHENAU, BISHOP OF EICHSTÄTT
William of Reichenau (Wilhelm von Reichenau, Wilhelmus), remembered on November 18, provost of Eichstätt Cathedral¹, was elected bishop there on January 16, 1464. He was held in high esteem by Emperors Frederick III and Maximilian I for his wisdom and loyalty.
In 1487, in Innsbruck, he blessed the marriage of Duke Albert V of Bavaria to the imperial princess Cunigunde of Austria. The "holy and pious Eichstädt" testifies to the devotion he bore to the Mother of God and the saints. Under his leadership, the diocese of Eichstätt received new synodal statutes.
William passed away after 33 years of blessed ministry in his 70th year on November 18, 1496, in the castle of Obermässing. His epitaph in the Willibald Choir in Eichstätt describes him as a man adorned with all virtues.
¹ original spelling: Eichstädt
