WALTER OF GUIMARAES, RELIGIOUS

Walter (Gualterius) is remembered on August. A native of Guimarães (Vimaranum), a city in Portugal, he was one of the earliest disciples of Saint Francis of Assisi. After Walter's  death in 1258, he shone with miracles; in particular, by an oil highly beneficial against all diseases that was said to have constantly flowed from his grave. Solemn translations of his relics took place in 1277 and 1577. The nobility of Guimarães established a congregation in his honour, which Pope Gregory XIII endowed with great indulgences, on the condition that the members devoutly visit the shrine of this blessed Walter on December 17, the day of the grant.
