Born on December 4, 1843 in Helta (Batroun), a tiny village in a remote corner of the Ottoman Empire, Elias Hoyek (Patriarch Elias Hoayek, Elias Peter Hoayek, Elyas Butros al-Hwayek) defended the idea of creating a Greater Lebanon, two months after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles (June 28, 1919), which placed part of the Middle East under French mandate. Lebanon was a true jewel; its human and spiritual vocation was no less precious: it was to serve as a treasure-chest for peaceful coexistence, enabling 'the wolf and the lamb' to dwell together (as the prophet Isaiah wrote), a messianic biblical ideal that Lebanon would seek to embody and of which Pope John Paul II would later say that it is 'a model of freedom and pluralism for the East and the West' - a model that continues to elevate the country to this day despite all the historical difficulties the country has faced.
Blessed Elias, whom ecclesial accounts portray as a man of piety, discipline and charity, entered the seminary at the age of sixteen, and then continued his training in Rome. He received priestly ordination in 1870. The Roman formation period was part of a Maronite tradition linked to Rome, preparing him for his future role in an Ottoman, Middle Eastern and multi-denominational environment. After returning to Lebanon, Blessed Elias then went on to participate in the pastoral and institutional life of the Maronite Church.
In January 1899, Blessed Elias was elected the 72nd Maronite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch. His patriarchy covered a period of profound upheaval. Faced with the famine that ravaged Mount Lebanon between 1915 and 1918, he freely opened houses, convents and patriarchal structures to the hungry in true Christian charity for Christians, Jews and Muslims alike, irrespective of the needy people's backgrounds. Blockades, war, requisitions, economic disorganization and locust invasions were other factors that caused major trauma to the entire Lebanese people.
During all these various challenges, Patriarch Elias acted both as a religious leader and as a social authority. He mobilized Church networks, welcomed victims and rallied for international support. Vatican sources recall that the Ottoman authorities had envisaged sending Patriarch Elias into exile, before diplomatic interventions spared him. This sequence reinforces the image of a religious leader exposed to political pressure but determined to defend the population he was entrusted with.
In 1895 he founded with Mother Rosalie Nasr the Congregation of the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family in Aabrine, in the Batrun. This foundation was a major milestone. It was the first Maronite female congregation of apostolic life. It combines education, social mission and Christian formation of families.
Blessed Elias is associated with two major legacies: the modern structure of the Maronite Church and the political birth of contemporary Lebanon. His name remains linked to a concept of Lebanon as a homeland of coexistence, rooted in an identity of its own and open to several communities. On the latter issue he commented thus:
"The country is composed of various religious communities. They differ not only in their dogmas, but also in their traditions, customs, ways of life and approach to social issues. Consequently, election on a confessional basis allows these communities to be represented within the assembly in accordance with a defined proportion. There, they learn to get to know one another and to reach agreement, each agreeing to sacrifice part of its own demands through a process of mutual concessions. This dynamic will gradually lead to a fusion and unification of political life."

Blessed Elias went to his eternal reward on December 24, 1931, in Bkerké.
On May 22, 2026, Pope Leo XIV authorized the promulgation of a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of Elias Hoyek, former Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites and founding figure of Greater Lebanon.
