Saints celebrated on the 17th of November
WELCOME!
HONORATA, VIRGIN |
She was born Honorata de Arnaud in the town of Beaucaire. Raised by her grandmother in Arles, she soon became the object of general admiration due to her extraordinary beauty. Yet, the constant remembrance of eternity prevented worldly thoughts from taking root in her.
A cousin, who served as the Superior of the Ursulines in Arles, encouraged her love for seclusion and the monastic life. However, when she revealed her desire to become a nun to her grandmother at home, Honorata was grounded and locked up by her grandmother for eight days. The Superior attempted to intercede on her behalf through influential personages. Honorata, seizing a favourable opportunity, fled to Avignon on a ship that her cousin, the Superior in Arles, had arranged for her, and there she succeeded in entering the aforementioned order. In all she did and endured, her guiding principle was: "May the will of God be done in all things." When she died on November 17, 1659 - at the age of 44 and in the twenty-second year of her religious life - the intriguing question remained as to whether she was remembered chiefly for her exceptional virtues in the religious state or for her natural gift of most stunning physical beauty in the secular world. (Tagh. II. 717)
