SAINT HERAIS, VIRGIN AND MARTYR
Saint Heraïs [Herais], Virgin and Martyr suffered near Alexandria [in Antinoe] under Emperor Maximian - that is, about a hundred years later than the aforementioned Saint Heraïs. She was killed after cruel torments, but cannot be determined whether she eventually met her end by the sword, as some hagiographers say, or by fire, as others claim. According to tradition, she was the daughter of a priest named Peter and was born at Tama in Egypt. The Bollandists* assume that the name Rhais [Rais] - by which she is also listed in some sources - is a corruption of the original name Heraïs.
