VENERABLE ANNO, ABBOT
| The venerable Anno, commemorated on January 7, was Abbot of the monastery of Micy (Miciacum) in the Diocese of Orléans, and simultaneously of the monastery of Jumièges (Gemeticum), assuming leadership around the year 943. He possessed the spirit of poverty and charity to such a high degree that he habitually refreshed strangers with wine, while he and his brethren - who were devoted to him with deep love and reverence - drank only water. After governing for more than thirty years and restoring to an excellent state the monastery - which had previously been so close to ruin that it had effectively been auctioned off to the highest bidder - he died in the odor of sanctity in the year 973, deeply mourned by his brethren. His body was found incorrupt when it was exhumed some years later. |
