ILLUMINATUS OF RIETI, RELIGIOUS

Illuminatus of Rieti (Illuminatus Reatinus) - so named after the city of Rieti (Reate) in the Papal States - was blind from birth and miraculously regained his sight through Saint Francis of Assisi; his father subsequently gave him the aforementioned name, while he himself became a disciple and companion of the saint on his journey to Syria and distinguished himself especially through his piety. Saint Francis is also said to have confided in him regarding his stigmata. The Bollandists* (Oct. II. 650, no. 550) provide further details, noting that Saint Francis summoned Illuminatus - along with several other friars - and asked for advice regarding the matter [stigmata] in very general terms. Illuminatus immediately realized that a miraculous phenomenon was involved and remarked that this grace had been bestowed upon Francis not merely for his own sake, but for the sake of those around him as well [for the greater glory of God]; he ought, therefore, to share the information with others rather than bury the talent. Thereupon, with great diffidence and reserve, Saint Francis recounted the details of the vision to him. It was inevitable that the sacred wounds would eventually be revealed after his death; indeed, some are said to have seen them even during the Saint's lifetime - specifically, as Saint Bonaventure reports (cited by the Bollandists*, Oct. II. 650, no. 552), Brother Elias and our Illuminatus (who, incidentally, died as early as 1227). Illuminatus is also listed in the calendar of the Third Order under May 5.

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 30th of May WELCOME! BLESSED LUKE KIRBY, PRIEST AND MARTYR 16th century houses, painted by Auguste Mayer He was born in the bishopric of Durham, according to Raissius ; others say at Richmond, in Yorkshire. He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission. Where he had not been long before he again went abroad, and travelled to Rome, partly for devotion, and partly for further improvement in learning. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
