SAINT AARON, ABBOT


Saint Aaron, Abbot (Feast day: June 22 or June 21). Saint Aaron, an abbot, was born in England towards the end of the fifth century and came to France; there, in Brittany, he presided over a monastery situated on an island opposite the town of Aletha - an island that took its name, "Monke"(Monachus) or "Arem" (Aaron), from him. 
When Saint Machutus (Saint Malo) intended to sail from England to France to preach the faith, he found a small boat on the shore in which sat our Saviour in human form. Our Lord invited him aboard and guided him across the sea, saying: "There is an island in this sea inhabited by a monk named Aaron; I shall have my angel lead you to him, and he will receive you most graciously." And so it came to pass. 
Aaron welcomed the saint in the manner befitting a true servant of God and shared with him the honour of the apostolic mission. He died in the middle of the sixth century, and his feast is celebrated in the Diocese of Saint Malo on June 22 (or June 21 in other places). He is venerated with particular devotion in the Diocese of Saint Brieuc, where a parish church also bears his name.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
