ST ADRIAN AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS - 4 MARCH

SAINT ADRIAN AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS

Saint Adrian was of royal Hungarian lineage; after becoming a bishop, he won many heathens in that land for the Gospel. Later, he travelled to Scotland with 6,600 Christians, where he once again converted a great number of heathens and was elected Bishop of St Andrews. When the Danes ravaged Scotland, he was forced to flee to the Scottish island of May, along with Bishop Stolbrandus, Saints Glodianus and Cajus, and many others. On this island, around the year 870, they were all killed by the Danes. God glorified them after their deaths through many miracles. Some hagiographers reckon that these martyrs were not Hungarians, but rather of Scottish origin.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
