SAINT ALVITUS, BISHOP OF LEON

Saint Alvitus (Albitus), Bishop (feast day: December 27; alternatively October 3).

Saint Alvitus, Bishop of Leon [León] in Spain, was formerly a monk and abbot at the monastery of Sahagunt [Sahagún]. As Bishop of Leon, he rendered great service to his church, which he governed in all holiness until God called him from this life in 1063, particularly through the translation of the relics of Saint Isidore of Seville. Some hagiographers also record his commemoration on October 3. Regarding this date, the Bollandists* note that the Spanish martyrologies list this holy bishop on December 27 and that he enjoys some measure of public veneration in Spain.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest.
