SAINT AUGUSTALIS, BISHOP OF ARLES

Saint Augustalis, commemorated on September 7, was a Bishop of Arles in France who lived between the 3rd century and the middle of the 4th. He is to be clearly distinguished from the later Bishop Augustalis, who attended the Council of Orange. The Roman Martyrology* states simply, under September 7, that he is venerated in Gaul - without specifying his episcopal see. This is likely because the martyrology's author, Baronius*, accidentally mixed up these two bishops. Therefore he could not possibly assign this see to our saint, given that during the latter's lifetime , a certain Hilarius signed the acts of that council as Bishop of Arles.
