SAINT FRIARDUS, CONFESSOR

(SS. Friardus and Secundellus, Confessors [August 1)].

Saint Friardus - called Friarius by Butler* - was distinguished from childhood by his fear of God; he spent most of his time in vigil and prayer, yet never failed to earn his livelihood through manual labour. After falling from a tall tree and remaining uninjured, he resolved to serve God ceaselessly in solitude. Together with Abbot Sabaudus and the deacon Secundellus, he settled on the island of Vindunita, in the territory of Nantes, living there in a simple cell. When the wind once tore a branch from a tree he had planted, Friardus fashioned a staff from it; long afterwards, he planted it in the ground and watered it diligently, and it grew into a large tree. Before his death, he respectfully invited Bishop Felix to visit him. He passed into eternal life during the second half of the sixth century. Bucelin* also states that Friardus lived around the year 600.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
