ST FULK, CONFESSOR - 22 MAY

SAINT FULK, CONFESSOR

S. Fulcus Peregrinus ([Fulk], Folco) is commemorated on May 22. This saint was an Englishman by birth. For the sake of Christ, he gave away his paternal inheritance to the poor and visited many holy sites. He died in the 12th century at Santa Padre - a town in the Diocese of Aquino, Italy - and was glorified through miracles.

On May 18, 1582, Pope Gregory XIII granted a plenary indulgence for a period of ten years to all those who visited the saint's church at Santa Padre (where his relics were preserved) on his feast day and, after receiving the holy sacraments, prayed for harmony among princes, the eradication of heresy, and the exaltation of our holy Church. Saint Fulk is also listed in the Roman Martyrology on May 22.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
