ST YWIUS, CONFESSOR - 6 OCTOBER

SAINT YWIUS, CONFESSOR

Ywius [Saint Iwy], Confessor, is commemorated on October 6. This holy hermit enjoys particular veneration in Brittany, where he died in the 7th or 8th century. The locality bears his name (Saint-Yvi) and is situated in the Department of Finistère. Originally from Scotland, from the region of Lindisfarne near Berwickshire, he was one of the sons of Barnon and Egida. He received the habit of Saint Benedict and ordination to the diaconate from Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. A love for the solitary life, hidden in God, led him to the coast of Léon in the Diocese of Quimper, where he persevered in pious exercises until his blessed end. The Bollandists* date this event to the year 704. Legend recounts numerous miracles attributed to him; consequently, his remains were translated to Wilton Abbey (Wiloduni coenobium) in England at the end of the 10th or the beginning of the 11th century.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
