BLESSED GODEFRID, BISHOP OF LANGRES

Godefrid (Godefridus, Gofridus, [Godfrey]) (feast days: July 15 or July 22; November 8 or November 13) - Prior (or, according to some, Abbot) of Clairvaux and subsequently Bishop of Langres (Lingones), is listed as "Blessed Godefridus" by Chalemot* on November 8, and others (the Sammarthani) accord him a form of veneration by including him in their work (Gallia christiana*) under November 13. Lechner* lists him under the name Godfrid on July 22, also assigning him the title "Blessed." According to the Bollandists* he does not receive public veneration (IV. 4).

Godefrid accepted election as Bishop of Langres only upon papal command - writes Lechner* - and after several years of apostolic activity he resigned and returned to Clairvaux. There, he worked on the final three books of the biography of

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and went to his eternal reward in the year 1165.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
