WELCOME!

BLESSED JOAN ROIG I DIGGLE, MARTYR

Blessed Joan [John] Roig i Diggle (May 12, 1917 -September 11, 1936) was a teenager from  Catalonia who had hoped to become a missionary. A member of the Federation of Young Christians of Catalonia, Blessed Joan went to school in Barcelona before he moved to complete his education under the La Salle Brothers and Piarists in El Masnou. He then had to take on jobs in warehouses in order to support his father who had become unemployed due to a financial situation in his workplace. Blessed Joan delivered communion to the old and sick and was known for offering them comfort during the mounting Spanish Civil War when it became uncertain as to the fate for priests and religious. A daily communicant himself, Blessed Joan was granted permission to keep the Eucharist in his home so that he would be able to distribute It more easily during a time when many priests were driven underground. Blessed Joan spoke out against communism which made him an opponent to the regime; he was arrested and killed soon after for his religious convictions. Before being martyred, he consumed all the Sacred Hosts in his care to prevent them being desecrated. His last words were, "God is with me."

On November 7, 2020, during Pope Francis' papacy, Joan was beatified in the Sagrada Familia basilica, Barcelona.

He is a patron of persecuted Christians.

PRAYER:

Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that we who know how courageously your holy martyr Joan confessed the faith, may experience his goodness as he intercedes for us with you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

BLESSED LUKE KIRBY, PRIEST AND MARTYR 16th century houses, painted by Auguste Mayer He was born in the bishopric of Durham, according to Raissius ; others say at Richmond, in Yorkshire. He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission. Where he had not been long before he again went abroad, and travelled to Rome, partly for devotion, and partly for further improvement in learning. Here he remained in the English college till 1580, when he returned into England, and was not long after apprehended: for I find by a printed diary of things transacted in the Tower of London from 1580 till 1585, that on the 5th of December, 1580, Luke Kirby, Thomas Cottam , and other priests, were brought to the Tower from other prisons; and that these two, on the 10th...
