WELCOME!
MAURICE, ARCHBISHOP OF ROUEN |
Maurice, remembered on January 11, the fifty-fourth Archbishop of Rouen and formerly Bishop of Le Mans, ranks among the most pious and meritorious prelates of the French Church. Elected after a one-year vacancy of the see to succeed Theobald (d. 1229), he rendered great service to the reform of ecclesiastical discipline by holding synods and conducting visitations. In 1233, he placed the diocese under interdict. His stewards calculated the revenues of the archiepiscopal mensa (the episcopal endowment) at 12,000 pounds; yet he directed that only two or three thousand be used for his own needs and those of his household, declaring: "Beyond that, I possess nothing; it is the property of the poor - use it for the poor." In his measures, he showed no regard for persons or social standing; he punished unchaste priests without mercy. He died during the Octave of the Epiphany in 1235 and was buried in his cathedral on January 11.
