MERERIUS, BISHOP OF ANGOULEME
Mererius, Bishop of Angouleme (Angoulême, Engolismensis) - whose name is also spelled Martharius and Maracharius - is described by Saint Gregory of Tours as "a most eloquent teacher" (facundissimus doctor) who rendered great service to churches and ecclesiastical buildings. He was poisoned in the seventh year of his episcopate, around the year 576 (Greg. Turon. h. V. 37). The list of the Bishops of Angouleme (Gallia christiana n. II. 866) contains no indication suggesting that he was venerated as a saint. However, in the documents (Instrumenta, fol. 268) - where his burial place is mentioned - he is first referred to as "Saint Mererius", and in another passage as "Blessed."
