ST BOLONIA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR - 16 OCTOBER

SAINT BOLONIA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR

Saint Bolonia (feast day: October 16; commemoration: July 17), a virgin and martyr of Vignory (in the Chaumont arrondissement of the Haute-Marne department), was born to noble but pagan parents and raised in the Christian faith by a Christian woman. She suffered martyrdom around the year 362, and some of her remains are still preserved at the aforementioned location. Her relics were translated on July 17, 1417. In Church art, she is depicted carrying her head in her hands - not to suggest that she actually carried it for any distance after death, but to indicate the manner of her martyrdom.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
