SAINT BRENDAN OF BIRR, ABBOT

Saint Brendan (Brando) of Birr - feast day: November 29 or May 9 - was the founder of the monastery of Birr in the Irish county of King’s County. He is not to be confused with Saint Brendan, son of Findloga, who is venerated on May 16 and was likewise a disciple of Saint Finian of Clonard. Brendan was born in County Kerry - where he is also the titular patron of the cathedral at Ardfert - and received his early education there under Bishop Ert. According to Migne*, he went to his eternal reward in the year 561 or 572.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest.
