SAINT DOMITIAN, BISHOP OF MELITENE

Saint Domitian (Domitianus) is commemorated on January 10. A Bishop of Melitene (now Meledne on the right bank of the Euphrates) in Armenia, he was born during the reign of Emperor Justin the Younger (565-578) to wealthy and pious parents named Theodore and Eudokia. Upon reaching maturity, he entered into marriage. However, after losing his wife to death, he devoted himself entirely to the study of salvation and earned such a reputation that, despite having barely reached the age of thirty, he was appointed Bishop of the Church of Melitene. He was held in high esteem by Emperor Maurice; in the year 589 or 590, he persuaded the Emperor to help the Persian King Khosrow II regain his throne from the usurper Bahram Chobin (Varanes). He used the many lavish gifts received from the Emperor to support churches and hospitals, and made the care of the poor a matter of great personal concern. While travelling in Constantinople, he passed into eternal life (around the year 600), and his body was escorted back to his homeland accompanied by torches and the singing of hymns. Many miracles occurred through his intercession, and his memory was once celebrated alongside that of Saint Gregory of Nyssa in the Hagia Sophia.

He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
