SAINT FLORIDUS, BISHOP OF TIFERNUM

Saint Floridus, Bishop, commemorated on November 13, was the son of pious parents in Tifernum, Umbria (now Città di Castello, a city in the Papal States, in the Delegation of Perugia). After losing them, he dedicated himself and his worldly goods to the Church. Saint Herculanus, Bishop of Perugia, became his teacher; he remained with him until the bishop was taken from him by martyrdom. Subsequently, he returned to his native city and was raised to the episcopal dignity, distinguishing himself through the practice of every virtue as well as through miracles. He delivered a man possessed by an evil spirit, healed a fever patient, and restored sight to a blind man. Before his death, and in accordance with a heavenly admonition, he was visited by the bishops Laurentius of Arezzo, Habentius of Perugia, and Leoulius of Urbino. After his passing, he was chosen as the patron of his church. According to Migne*, he flourished during the time of Saint Gregory the Great, who bears witness to his holiness in his writings. (Buc. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
