WELCOME!

SAINT GALDERIC, FARMER

Saint Galderic [Galderich, Gauderic, Galdericus (Catalan: Sant Galdric, French: Saint Gaudérique) was a French peasant and ploughman. Born in the ancient village of Vilavella (located in modern-day Saint-Gaudéric, Aude, France), he flourished about 820 - 900 AD. Unlike many medieval saints who were clergy members or nobles, Galdericus was a regular lay farmer. He is remembered for his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, constant prayer while working the fields, and radical charity to the poor. Local legends credit him with miraculous events, such as keeping his threshing floor dry during violent rainstorms and causing a natural spring to flow.

He was officially canonized quite early, around 990 AD, at a provincial church council in Narbonne. For centuries, Sant Galdric was the premier patron saint of all Catalan agriculture. In times of severe drought, Benedictine monks and local communities would carry his relics down from the mountains of the Abbey of Saint-Martin du Canigou across the Perpignan plains to petition for rain.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, his primary patronage over Spanish Catalonia was largely supplanted by the cult of Saint Isidore the Farmer (San Isidro). However, he remains highly celebrated today in the French Pyrénées-Orientales and across various municipalities in Catalonia, where modern rural festivals and tractor processions are still held in his honour.

PRAYER:

Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Galderic may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
