SAINT GERVASIUS, MARTYR
The name Gervasius is derived from the Old German "ger" (spear, lance, etc.) and "was" (servant/retainer) - hence, "lancer"/"mercenary".
Little has come down to us regarding this Saint Gervasius. He was a biological brother of the holy bishop and martyr Leo of Rouen, and he played an active role in Leo’s apostolic mission, ultimately being deemed worthy to receive the palm of martyrdom alongside him. He was born in Carentan, in what is now the department of Manche. A third brother, named Philippus, is also counted among the saints. Saint Leo preached in the vicinity of Bayonne and was killed by pirates while carrying out this holy work; Saint Gervasius perished with him. The third brother, Philippus, managed to escape. The saint’s death occurred around the year 900. (I. 89-95.)
