SAINT NITHARDUS [NEIDHARD], PRIEST AND MARTYR
Nithardus (Nitarius), Presb. M.
This saint, a nephew of Saint Ansgar, Archbishop of Hamburg, was sent by him to Sweden, where he worked alongside Bishop Gandberius (surnamed Simon) for the salvation of souls. He ended up being killed by the sword by a mob and thus became Sweden's first martyr. On the same occasion, the bishop and his other companions were robbed, mistreated and driven out of the country. These events took place in 840, probably under King Olaf (Olaus).
