SAINT LEO, BISHOP OF SAMOS
Saint Leo, bishop on the island of Samos, a Greek by birth, renounced everything the world could offer him for Jesus' sake. He led a life full of miracles and merits and died on the island of Samos, in the Aegean Sea, where he also was buried at first.
Later his body was taken away by the Venetians, whose ships stayed in the port of Samos for some time. They brought his mortal remains to the city of Malamocco and handed them over to the local bishop Leo, who buried them with great solemnity. St Leo's body rested thus until A.D. 1101, where the greater part of the place was destroyed by a flood and the episcopal seat was transferred to Chiozza (Fossa Clodia).
Thereupon Leo's relics were translated to the church of St Servulus in Venice, where many miracles took place at his tomb. When he lived cannot be determined with certainty; but in any case he was not a bishop of Modon (Methone) in Greece, as some writers state erroneously.
